Deep within the meadow of Methow Valley, Washington the landscape is suddenly broken by the steel façade of ‘new caelifera’. Named for the scientific identification of grasshoppers that inhabit the site, the 2520ft2 cabin is a dynamic harmonization between sculptural and tectonic elements. The structure was designed and constructed by Washington-based Johnston Architects, who worked in close collaboration with the clients.

The design is a result of direct interpretation of the owners’ ideas, along with maximum efficiency of space and views to the distant sawtooth mountains. Taking influence from the angular aesthetics of origami, the home metaphorically folds itself within the partially lifted landscape. The floor plan was formed using a series vectors traced to distant mountain peaks, which is only obscured upon entrance to increase the sense of anticipation.

Glass and cedar work alongside steel to give the dwelling a unique look that flips back and forth between industrial and welcoming, familiar yet original. Inside, the living space faces a panoramic wall of natural light and views. A stage-like kitchen offers plenty of room to socialize and work in, and maintains its own spatial identity within the home. Further exploration will lead to the discovery of a hidden play space accessible by ladder, along with other small hidden spots.

The one bedroom cabin is able to accommodate nine people in winter, and eleven in summer. Beds are tucked into nooks, the study and den, and outside there’s a suspended bed. The effect of the home varies based on the season and time of day. The afternoon sunshine hitting natural materials gives the space an earthy appeal. After sunset, with the silhouettes’ of mountains in the background, it becomes a seat to witness the endless star-filled sky.
